Long-distance Seed Dispersal to Macquarie Island
Abstract
MACQUARIE ISLAND, latitude 54° 30' S., longitude 158° 57' E., occupies an isolated position in the Southern Ocean, 600-900 miles from the nearest land masses of New Zealand, Australia and the Antarctic continent, and about 5,000 miles from South America. Despite its isolation, Macquarie Island receives considerable amounts of driftwood, mostly from South America1.
