Stress-induced Suppression of Interferon Production in Virus-infected Mice
Abstract
INCREASED susceptibility to various viruses has been observed in mice exposed to psychological stress1, in which adrenal hyperactivity is considered to be a mediator. The decrease in resistance of stressed mice to vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) appears not to be related to impairment of antibody response2. Interferon has been proposed as an important factor in recovery from viral infections3, and interferon production in the chick embryo is inhibited by exogenous corticoid4. For these reasons, the following experiments were performed to determine whether the levels of interferon produced in vivo differ between stressed and unstressed mice infected with viruses.
