An infrared survey of the region of SA 193
Abstract
A rectangular field of 20 x IC centred on SA 193 has been searched for red stars using infrared objective-prism spectra. A total of 290 stars of types MI-M10 and 12 carbon stars have been found; 26 of the stars are variables. An additional 25 carbon stars have been identified in the remaining I I square degrees of the photographed field. The limiting infrared magnitude of the survey is about 13. The mean total visual absorption in the rectangular field is mag. It is caused by an obscuring cloud at about 2 kpc from the Sun. No significant increase in absorption occurs at greater distances for at least another 5 kpc. Space densities have been computed for the M2-M , M -M6 , M7-M10, and carbon stars. Comparisons with the densities in other directions in the Galaxy are given. __________________
