Orbital Motion of Alpha Ursae Minoris from Radial Velocities.
Abstract
Radial velocity observations of Polaris extending over 62 years, obtained with the Mills spectrograph attached to the 364nch refractor of the Lick Observatory, have been used to derive new elements of tbe spectroscopic orbit The elements found, P = 30 46 years, T = 1928 48, e = 0 639, co = 307?24, K = 409 km/sec, = -1641 km/sec, a sin i = 3 22 a u , f(m) = 0 036 m0, generally confirm Moore's results, derived from much less extensive material The spectroscopic companion responsible for the 30- year velocity-cycle has not been detected directly; this is to be expected since the Am inferred from the spectroscopic and astrometric data is probably 5-6 mag
