Localization of sparks in spark chambers through magnetostrictive effects
Abstract
In this method of spark localization an array of parallel wires is used as one of the spark chamber electrodes. The wires are made with a magnetostrictive material. It has been fiund that high magnetic fields are produced into the wire at the position of the spark by the spark current, which produce in the wire an elastic deformation that propagates along the wire as an elastic wave and can be detected at a distance as done in magnetostrictive delay lines. A precision of 1 mm in the localization of the sparks and a resolution of 2 mm for multiple sparks starting from the same wire have been obtained.
