Measurements of Negative-Muon Lifetimes in Light Isotopes
Abstract
Negative muons from the Carnegie Tech synchrocyclotron were stopped in the following targets: separated isotopes of lithium (Li6 and Li7) and boron (B10 and B11), and natural beryllium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. From an analysis of the resulting time spectrum of the decay electrons, the negative-muon lifetime in each of these substances was obtained. From a separate measurement of the μ+ lifetime, (2.202+/-0.003) μsec, the capture rates in the above elements were determined. They are (in units of 105/sec); λcap(Li6)=0.061+/-0.014, λcap(Li7)=0.018+/-0.014, λcap(B10)=0.265+/-0.015, λcap(B11)=0.218+/-0.016, λcap(Be)=0.10+/-0.02, λcap(C)=0.397+/-0.013, λcap(N)=0.65+/-0.04, and λcap(O)=0.98+/-0.03.
