Loss of Van Allen electrons due to whistlers
Abstract
The change in pitch angle due to resonance with a whistler is estimated for 1 MeV electrons. The effect is found to be important between the inner and outer belts. The resonant frequency varies rapidly with the magnetic shell and is high for the inner belt. The fall in the spectrum of whistlers above 20 kc/s may account for the rapid change of lifetime with shell beyond the inner belt. An estimate is made of the power required for a man-made transmitter to have a significant effect in the inner belt.
