The Harwell 30 MeV electron linear accelerator has been modified to provide electron bursts of 10 nsec duration at a repetition rate of 250 p.p.s. and peak current 0.2 A. A neutron time-of-flight spectrometer has been set up to cover the neutron energy range from 0.5 MeV up to ∼ 15 MeV. The timing system incorporates a 1000 channel analyser each channel having a duration of 4.3 nsec. Using a 20 metre flight path a typical overall energy resolution of 40 keV at 2 MeV is achieved. Measurements of the energy spectra of photoneutrons from the reaction S 32( γ, n)S 31 when irradiated with 26 MeV bremstrahlung demonstrate the performance of the spectrometer.
