Measurement of chemical equilibrium with the mass spectrometer and the influence of residual gases
Abstract
A thermodynamical discussion has been given of the time of attaining equilibrium in a mass spectrometer Knudsen cell. The influence of residual gases on this equilibrium is studied for the case of CaO solid in equilibrium with Ca gas + O 2 gas in the presence of CH 4. We have shown that at 2200°K CH 4-pressures, larger than 10 -8 atm., are not permitted for accurate determinations of relative concentrations.
