Micrometeorite measurements from 1958 Alpha and Gamma satellites
Abstract
Grid abrasion micrometeorite detectors mounted on 1958 Alpha and Gamma satellites give a maximum influx rate of particle 10 μ in diameter or larger for the period 1 February to 7 May 1958. On 7 May 1958 two detectors appeared to indicate impacts on 1958 Gamma. The failure within a few days of all electronics on the satellite open the possibility that a shower was encountered with meteor damage subsequently destroying electronics; or of an electronics failure which first manifested itself in the meteorite detection gear.
