Turbulent Motion in the Solar Atmosphere. I. Doppler Widths of Photospheric Lines.
Abstract
The method proposed by Goldberg (1958) is applied to twenty-five pairs of multiplet lines of moderate intensity in order to determine Doppler widths in various optical depths in the solar photosphere at the center of the disk of the sun. The turbulent velocity is found to decrease with height. The derived velocities are 1.55, 1.08, and 0.75 km/sec, corresponding to the optical depths 0.6, 0.4, and 0.2 at X 5000 A.
