Early-Type Stars in the Direction of the Galactic Center.
Abstract
A group of O stars in the direction of the galactic center has been observed for polarization, color, magnitude, and spectral type. The stars as a group have a distance modulus of 12.4 mag. or 3.0 kiloparsecs. The group is probably associated with a spiral arm inside the one isolated at 1.4 kiloparsecs from the sun. One star, HD 164019, located on a star cloud, appears to be more distant than all the others. The observed m - M6 is 14.6 mag. and has an absorption of only 1.7 mag. The interstellar polarization is greatest for the more highly reddened stars. The relationship of the observed polarization and the visible obscuring clouds is well established. However, the distance of the obscuring cloud is still in doubt.
