General magnetic fields in the Sun and stars (Report on progress of astronomy)
Abstract
Since the early work of G. E. Hale (x, 2) a number of attempts have been made to detect and measure the general magnetic field of the Sun. Also magnetic fields on a large scale have been observed in a variety of stars. The first part of this report (by H.W.B.) will give a brief survey of the observational work on such fields. Theories of the fields will be briefly discussed in the second part (by T.G.C.).
