The significance and diatom content of a deep-sea floor sample from the neighbourhood of the greates oceanic depth
Abstract
A unique sample collected by H.M.S. Challenger abour five miles away from the greatest known oceanic depth in the Marianas Trench has been presented to the British Museum (Natural History). The systematics of the diatom Ethmodiscus rex are discussed. There is clear evidence of erosion in photographs taken by the electron microscope. The geomorphological relations, as well as some of the problems of deep-sea trenches, are discussed.
