Chlorophorin, a Constituent of Iroko, the Timber of Chlorophora excelsa
Abstract
IROKO, the decay-resistant timber of a tropical African tree, Chlorophora excelsa, contains 2-8 per cent of an amorphous phenol, m.p. 157-159°, which can be extracted by ether and has not hitherto been isolated. We propose for this substance the name `chlorophorin' analyses of the crystalline tetra-acetate, tetramethyl and tetraethyl ethers agree most closely with the molecular formula C25H30O4.
