On the crystal structure of chlorine
Abstract
The crystal structure of chlorine at -185°C was determined with theX-ray goniometer. We found a tetragonal lattice with a = 8.56 Å and c = 6.12 Å; density 2.09 with 8 molecules per unit cell. The intensities of the Debije-Scherrer lines measured by Köhler agree with the space group D 4h16, in which the co-ordinates of the Cl-atom are x = 0.125; y = 0.167; z = 0.107. In this group the distance of the atoms in the Cl-molecule is 1.99 Å.
