Balloon observations of several southern X-ray sources
Abstract
Observations made by a balloon-borne large area X-ray telescope are reported, and its detector is described. High time resolution observations of Sco X-1 indicate that activity is at least as great above 20 keV than as at low energies, and preliminary analysis shows that data in the 20-60 keV energy range are consistent with a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT approximately equal to 5 keV. The upper limit to the 20-50 keV flux from Cir X-1 during the quiescent state is reported to be about 0.00015 per sq cm per sec per keV. Also reported are details of a transient increase believed to be a gamma ray burst.
