Energy changes of cosmic rays.
Abstract
The paper demonstrates the essential correctness of a previously derived formula (Gleeson, 1972; Quenby, 1973; and Gleeson and Webb, 1974, 1978) for the mean rate of change of momentum of cosmic rays for a volume fixed in the solar system. In addition it is shown that, contrary to widespread belief, cosmic rays undergo energy changes even when adiabatic deceleration is inoperative. The example chosen is that of cosmic rays moving in a uniform tube in which there is a convective background with constant speed.
