The role of supercomputers in astronomical modelling
Abstract
The role of supercomputers in providing a modelling tool for scientific research is discussed. A few of the new astropysical applications which have been developed for supercomputers are described, such as stellar convection, colliding neutron stars, supernova remnants and supershells, galaxy mergers, and shear phenomena in the jets and lobes of active galaxies. It is predicted that the new modus operandi of numerical simulation will occupy as important a place in astrophysical research as do the traditional techniques today.
