The stability of stellar atmospheres
Abstract
Preliminary results from an analytical investigation of the stability against temperature perturbations of a plane-parallel grey-opacity LTE Eddington-approximation model stellar atmosphere with Te = 10,000 K, log g = 4.0, and mu = 0.5 are reported. The atmosphere is considered as a whole, and the results of simulations for models with different scattering/absorption profiles are presented in graphs and characterized. If scattering increases near the surface, the temperature perturbations are found to concentrate at the surface even in the fundamental mode.
