A confusion limited radio survey from the Molonglo cross.
Abstract
The first Molonglo deep survey of extragalactic radio sources at 408 MHz resulted from observations made in 1973. This paper presents a second deep survey, prepared from observations made with the Molonglo cross telescope in 1978. At this time the telescope was working at its maximum sensitivity and the observations reported here take advantage of increased sensitivity resulting in a predicted reduction in noise by a factor of ≡2 relative to the MDS1. The increased sensitivity gives better source positions and a lower limit of 60 mJy has been set by combined uncertainties in noise and confusion. The area of deep survey analysed is now approximately doubled. Combining the two surveys, a continuous strip of sky has been observed for all RAs from 01h to 23h excluding areas of low galactic latitude.
