Maps of Centaurus A from Molonglo and Culgoora.
Abstract
Maps are presented of the inner lobes of Centaurus A at approximately 50-arcsec resolution from Culgoora at 327 MHz and from Molonglo at 843 MHz. A map at similar resolution by Christiansen (1977) is shown for comparison. Positions of the brightness features of the VLA map of Schreier et al. (1981) are indicated. The VLA map, with its higher resolution showed the presence of three central sources, one of which is believed to be coincident with the nuclear engine at the center of the optical galaxy, the other two sources being coincident with condensations in the X-ray jet which extends from the nucleus towards the inner northeast radio lobe. Inferences drawn from the data on all the features are discussed.
