The tilt of the LMC
Abstract
The sense of tilt of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is established by comparing the photoelectric B and V magnitudes of about two dozen Cepheids on the extreme eastern and western sides of the Cloud. The period-luminosity and period-luminosity-color relations for the LMC Cepheids are redetermined. A tilt of 27 + or - 10 deg is derived, and it is shown that the eastern side is nearer the Milky Way.
