New observations of the beat cepheid U Trianguli Australis.
Abstract
Results are presented for a Fourier analysis of an extensive series of photoelectric photometric observations of the beat Cepheid U TrA in the V band. It is found that the total pulsation energy for the star has remained virtually unchanged over the past 20 yr, that there has been a redistribution in favor of the first overtone at the expense of the fundamental, that the difference in first-overtone/fundamental ratios is significant at the 7-sigma level, and that the amount of cross coupling has hardly changed. Evidence is discussed which favors the explanation that beat Cepheids occupy a region of the H-R diagram where continuing mixed-mode behavior is possible.
