The dynamics of the Magellanic Stream.
Abstract
Attention is given to several theories for the origin of the Magellanic Stream including the tidal theory of close gravitational encounter of the Clouds with our Galaxy, the theory that the gas clouds of the Stream are primordial and in the same orbit as the Clouds, and an interaction model in which the Stream is assumed to include various dwarf spheroidal galaxies and globular clusters. Some results of model fitting only for the case of a purely gravitational interaction between the Galaxy and some progenitor of the LMC/SMC system are presented.
