Cosmic Ray Particle Diffusion and the Fokker-Planck Equation
Abstract
An investigation is conducted regarding the transport of charged particles in random electromagnetic fields. It is shown that under certain general conditions a Fokker-Planck equation is valid. However, these conditions are not satisfied in the case of the interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations. It is pointed out that the Fokker-Planck equation will only be valid throughout momentum space when the particle orbits are only slightly perturbed during many field correlation times.
