A classical dynamical model with shape deformation for strongly damped collisions
Abstract
We present a classical dynamical model of strongly damped collisions of heavy ions. We introduce shape degrees of freedom that allow for (a) formation of a neck between the two ions, (b) transfer of matter from one ion to the other, (c) complete fusion, (d) stretching apart to a scission point. We solve the equations of motion using Coulomb, centrifugal and surface tension forces, one-body "wall" dissipation, and irrotational flow shape inertias. We discuss matching conditions during neck formation. Results for scattering angle, energy loss and mass transfer are in good agreement with data on Bi-Kr and Bi-Xe reactions.
