A physical interpretation of drop sizes in homogenizers and agitated tanks, including the dispersion of viscous oils
Abstract
Theoretical studies include firstly, the applicability of the Kolmogoroff-Hinze theory of droplet break-up in a turbulent liquid, testing it over a range of local power dissipations per unit mass of liquid from 5 to 10 9 W kg -1. Secondly, the turbulent fluctuation velocity is related to the size and rotational speed of the impeller blades in agitated vessels. Thirdly, the influence on droplet size of the viscosity of the dispersed phase is included in a new, simple basic theory, which is tested using data on agitated tanks, static mixers and homogenizers.
