A first look at two newly discovered MeerKAT minihalos
Abstract
Radio minihalos are diffuse synchrotron sources of unknown origin which occupy the cool cores of massive clusters, often confined within sloshing fronts. To date only about 25 minihalos are known but additional examples are beginning to be identified by the new generation of radio observatories. We propose snapshot observations of two newly-identified minihalos from the MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey for which no modern X-ray data is available. With 45ks of ACIS-I time we will determine the basic properties of the host clusters, confirm their cool core status, examine them for signs of sloshing and recent interactions, and characterize the intra-cluster medium in their minihalos, allowing comparison with minihalo formation models and the wider cluster population.
