Multi-Probe Studies of Merging Galaxy Clusters
Abstract
Projection effects can make it difficult to study cluster mergers by diluting morphological features and producing degeneracies between merger parameters and viewing angle. As a result, much of our knowledge comes from the handful of systems with mergers occurring in the plane of the sky (POS). We have assembled a unique set of multi-probe data for a sample of eight galaxy clusters. For each system we have kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect maps and approximately 200 member redshifts to probe the LOS velocity of the gas and dark matter, and Chandra X-ray maps and HST lensing models and to probe the POS distributions of the gas and dark matter. One cluster, MACS J2129.4, lacks sufficient Chandra X-ray counts, and we are proposing 170 ksec of new observations of this system.
