Comparing ion outflow during a substorm and SMC event
Abstract
We will compare the high latitude ion outflow calculated during a substorm and steady magnetospheric convection event using the coupled Polar Wind Outflow Model (PWOM) and the Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model (GITM). The two events being evaluated have similar solar wind drivers and occur during similar UT and season. Therefore, the investigation will focus on how the differences in Joule heating, conductance, and associated magnetospheric dynamics between the two types of events will impact the ion escape. In particular, we will examine the implications for the spatial distribution of the H+ and O+ ion escape as well as the integrated fluence of escaping particles.
