Integration of seismic and electromagnetic techniques for investigating urban areas of Basilicata Region affected by hydrogeological instability phenomena.
Abstract
Satellite and ground-based interferometric SAR technique, active (MASW-Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves, P-wave refraction) and passive (seismic ambient noise measurements) seismic methods, and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) were applied to investigate four urban areas of Basilicata Region (southern Italy) affected by hydrogeological instability phenomena.
Three of these events are classified as landslides and occurred in the hilly areas (Montescaglioso, Gorgoglione and Pomarico) surrounding the city of Matera. The fourth event is considered as a differential failure of soil affecting the Avigliano village close to Potenza town. Montescaglioso and Pomarico landslides are fast events occurred after intense rainfall periods and caused damage to commercial activities, strategic infrastructures and buildings, resulting in people evacuation. Phenomena observed in Gorgoglione and Avigliano are characterized by a slow and constant evolution over time that causes evident damages to structures and inconvenience to the population. Satellite and ground-based interferometric SAR technique made it possible to verify and monitor the state of activity of the investigated phenomena, highlighting more critical areas. The comparison of ERT and seismic results with direct information allowed us to reconstruct the geological and geotechnical setting of the subsoil down to 40 m depth, to identify high water content areas and to locate weakness surfaces. The integration of different techniques facilitated the overcoming of the drawbacks of each single method, especially those related to the applications in urban areas (i.e., lowering of signal-to-noise ratio), allowing to obtain information at different spatial resolution and scales and to reduce the ambiguity in the interpretation of the subsoil geological model.- Publication:
