A Faster Super-Parameterized Model: Results From the New SP-E3SM
Abstract
The Super-Parameterized E3SM (SP-E3SM) was recently developed to achieve maximum throughput with the use of several techniques, including hardware GPU acceleration. These techniques will be discussed along with the results of a recent simulation campaign and how this model compares to previous studies with super-parameterized models in the context of the climate, tropical wave modes, and the diurnal cycle. The use of a cubed-sphere geometry with a spectral element dynamical core amplifies an unphysical imprinting of the grid structure onto the solution. Analysis is presented to quantify this problem, and initial results from a new quasi-equal area physics grid configuration is shown to remedy the problem.
