Design and construction of a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope
Abstract
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (Sp-STM) is a very efficient technique to map the surface magnetic structures in real space down to the atomic level. Unfortunately, such experimental facility is not available in Brazil. Here we present our results on the designing and construction of a Sp-STM. The aim of this project was to develop a high performance STM operated in ultra high vacuum (UHV) and low temperature (LT). One of the main features of our project is to allow in-situ tip exchange, which is crucial for the implementation of Sp-STM. The details of the designing and the results of performance tests are presented. Acknowledgments: CAPES, CNPq, and FAPEMIG (Brazilian agencies).
