Infrared Observations of Luyten-Giclas Cool White Dwarfs
Abstract
We continue our study of the Luyten-Giclas proper motion binary systems containing white dwarfs as one of the components. We detail our efforts to obtain near infrared (NIR) photometry of the coolest of these stars, the DC subclass. We use the JHK’ photometry to obtain the dominant atmospheric constituent (H, He) in order to determine which cooling model to apply. We present results for our recent observations conducted with the NASA IRTF and show we can clearly distinguish between H and He atmosphere white dwarfs.
