CMEs Driven by Flux Rope Herniation
Abstract
Much numerical work has been done on the magnetic kink instability as a CME driver, but thus far it is all subject to numerical diffusion which can bias results toward eruption. We present further results on this instability in the absence of reconnection. We have found that a highly twisted metastable magnetic configuration consisting of a fluxrope contained by an arcade is capable of creating an impulsive CME through herniation and without any reconnection.
