Solar photosphere and convection
Abstract
An abrupt transition from convective to radiative energy transport at the solar surface results in a spatially and temporally very complex photosphere. The properties of the solar photosphere as well as its importance for both the sub-surface layers and for the chromosphere and corona above are now beginning to be understood in some detail. Progress has been made largely through the use and interpretation of numerical simulations of this region. Comparisons are made in a forward sense; synthetic observational data are generated from the numerical models, and are compared directly with corresponding observational data.
