Interpretation of passive microwave satellite images over Oman and Egypt
Abstract
Passive microwave emissivity maps of the globe have been calculated from satellite observations between 19 and 85 GHz with the Special Sensor Microwave /Imager (SSM/I). Surprisingly low microwave emissivities are observed in Oman and Egypt over large territories (more than 5degx5deg). Several years of observations have been checked and these signatures do not evolve with time. These areas of low emissivities are amazingly well correlated with Eocene and Oligocene outcrops in these areas. Why Eocene and Oligocene surfaces would induce such low microwave emissivities? Samples of rocks and sediments from these areas are being analyzed, for their chemical properties as well as for their dielectric properties.
