Efficient Geometry-Based Modeling of Submonolayer Film Growth
Abstract
A new strategy is developed for modeling film growth, which avoids the usual explicit treatment of terrace diffusion of deposited atoms and their aggregation with islands - a computationally expensive step either within an atomistic or continuum framework. We use a geometric characterization of island growth in terms of capture zones (CZ's), and implement simple but realistic geometric rules to incorporate crucial spatial aspects of the island nucleation process (i.e., nucleation nearby CZ boundaries). This approach correctly predicts subtle details of the island distribution, and is especially efficient for strongly reversible island formation.
