Helicity injection and redistribution during relaxation of solar/astrophysical plasmas
Abstract
We will discuss various MHD processes occurring in the context of evolution of solar coronal magnetic configurations, due to some boundary (photospheric) constraints. Several model problems will be presented and their implication in the injection of magnetic helicity as well triggering of confined and large scale disruptions will be dis- cussed. The nature of the relaxation state reached after the disruption will be discussed in the context of Taylor's theory of plasma relaxation. We will show some recent nu- merical results (relevant to astrophysical/solar disruptions), indicating that although this theory seems to be in agreement with experiments in Reversed Field pinch De- vices (but not in Tokamaks), it exhibits strong discrepancies with these astrophysical disruptions.
