Luminosity Function for Different Spectral Types of Galaxies in the GOODS Southern Field
Abstract
We present results from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) on the luminosity function for different galaxy types in the CDF-S. The results are based on observation from both ground based telescopes (ESO 2.2m, NTT and VLT) and ACS on-board HST. Using the extensive wavelength coverage for this survey (U'UBVRIzJHKs), we estimate photometric redshifts for all galaxies to RAB ~ 26.5 mag. Comparing the photometric redshifts with a training sample of available spectroscopic redshifts, we estimate an accuracy of σ z [(zspec - zphot)/(1 + zspec)] = 0.08 to z ~ 3. A catalogue based on an R-band (RAB < 24) selected sample with corresponding photometric redshifts is used to estimate the luminosity function for different spectral types of galaxies to z = 0.5 in U, R and Ks. We also measure the source counts in these bands as a function of spectral type. Ground-based imaging data were taken at ESO 2.2m, NTT, VLT, and NOAO 4m telescopes and made publicly available.
