Energy Injection Rate of the Ring Current Estimated from Dst
Abstract
We have estimated the energy injection rate for geomagnetic storms from the hourly Dst variation and an assumed decay constant for the ring current. It is found that intense storms do not require both long and strong energy injections to the ring current. Intense short-lived injection as well as weaker energy inputs of longer duration can produce storms of equal magnitude for any given Dst size range
