Momentum Space Imaging of Electronic Excitations in Fast Ion-Ion Collisions Using Parallel Processing
Abstract
By solving the time-dependent Dirac equation in momentum space we investigate basic electronic excitations in fast collisions (typically MeV/n) between bare projectile ions and one-electron target ions. Preliminary non-perturbative probabilities for excitation, transfer, and single ionization are obtained using parallel processing on the Cray T3E at NERSC. The calculated electron momentum distributions provide a direct visualization of the collision dynamics in time. This method, applied entirely in momentum space, is a theoretical complement of COLTRIMS experiments.
