The Southern Hubble Deep Field: HDF-S
Abstract
177 orbits of HST imaging and spectroscopy were devoted to three adjacent fields plus flanking fields in the southern CVZ in October 1998, in an observing program similar to the original northern HDF. Two important features of the HDF-S make it distinct from the HDF-N: (1) simultaneous observations with WFPC2, STIS, and NICMOS in parallel observing modes, leading to imaging of three separate fields, and (2) the inclusion of a zem=2.2 quasar in the line of sight for the STIS field. The HDF-S observations produced WFPC2 images in U, B, V, and I; a deep STIS image of the field surrounding the quasar; spectroscopy of the quasar with STIS from 1150-3560 Angstroms; and deep imaging of an adjacent field with NICMOS in the J, H, and K bands. All of the data, both raw and reduced, have been made public on 23 November 1998 and are available from the HST archive for analysis.
