Effects of non-parallel propagation on p- and f-modes
Abstract
The frequencies of p- and f-modes are calculated for a model atmosphere consisting of an isothermal chromospheric gas, within which is embedded a non-uniform horizontal magnetic field, resting upon a field-free medium whose temperature increases linearly with depth. The Alfven speed within the chromosphere is assumed to be independent of height. The modes may propagate at an angle θ to the magnetic field. The p-mode frequencies decrease with an increase in either the magnetic field strength or the propagation angle θ. The frequency of the f-mode is increased by the presence of a magnetic field; the frequency decreases with increasing angle θ.
