The use of Expert Systems in astronomical data handling.
Abstract
Numerical instabilities are a common problem in least square fitting of mathematical functions to observational data. Procedures corresponding to the expert systems method can then be very helpful. Expert Systems are computer programs offerring problem solving methods based on facts and rules which formalize the knowledge on special topics. The idea behind such expert system programs is that the users, the "experts", know the possible limit values of the variables to be determined by the least square fitting.
