On the North-South Asymmetry of Solar Activity Cycles
Abstract
We report a study of various solar phenomena occurring in both northern and southern hemispheres of the Sun for solar cycles 8-22. We have calculated the N-S asymmetry indices for several solar phenomena and plotted them against the number of solar cycles. The study indicates that the N-S asymmetry has a trend of a long-term characteristic time scale of about 110 yr. An explanation of this N-S asymmetry period is not available; it may be due to the asymmetric internal magnetic structure of the Sun.
