A New Echelle Spectrograph for Astroseismology
Abstract
One of the most promising techniques for detecting acoustic oscillations in solar-like stars is the measurement of minute radial velocity shifts produced by the oscillations. Photon noise limitations can be alleviated by observing a large number of spectral lines simultaneously. To this end we have recently completed construction of a new high-resolution echelle spectrograph for the Palomar 200'' Hale telescope. The instrument has a 2-pixel resolving power of R=45000, and currently uses a 1024*E24 CCD to record 19 orders per frame. In this poster we describe the spectrograph design and construction details, its performance, and its potential for asteroseismology measurements.
