Abstract
The results of a numerical MHD model are discussed, which we have used to investigate the influence of equipartition magnetic fields on the propagation of supersonic jets. We find that a purely poloidal equipartition field is capable of decollimating the jet, whereas a purely toroidal equipartition field increases the confinement, but introduces pinching waves. These oscillations can be stabilized by an additional poloidal field without destroying the collimation.
