Parity selection in nonlinear dynamics.
Abstract
The stability of different nonlinear α-effect dynamos in spherical geometry is studied. A critical value of the dynamo number is found, above which steady hydromagnetic solutions of even and odd parity are both stable. In αω-dynamos long-term variations between even and odd parity are possible. Comparison with similar variations of the sunspot number is made.
